UMR Comments on NIH Funding in Senate Republican COVID Relief Bill

July 27, 2020

The following statement can be attributed to UMR President Chol Pak:

“The Senate Republican COVID relief bill’s inclusion of $15.5 billion for the National Institutes of Health is a major victory for patients and for public health in the United States. During this coronavirus pandemic, when many research labs have closed and research pipelines halted, this relief package demonstrates that moving biomedical research forward must be a national priority.

“United for Medical Research commends Labor-HHS Subcommittee Chairman Roy Blunt and the Senate Republican leadership for recognizing the critical role NIH plays toward not only tackling COVID-19, but toward continuing to develop cures and treatments for our most vexing diseases.

“We urge the entire Senate and the House of Representatives to once again come together in bi-partisan fashion and support the inclusion of $15.5 billion for NIH, a necessary allocation for this agency’s lifesaving mission.”
