President Obama Commits to Investing in Biomedical Research, Encouraging Innovation and Creating Jobs

January 26, 2011

Gregory T. Lucier, United for Medical Research spokesperson and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Life Technologies, released the following statement in reaction to the President’s State of the Union Address:

“United for Medical Research (UMR) strongly supports the President’s vision of continued investment in biomedical research and innovation as part of the long-term solution to our nation’s economic challenges. Through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the federal government has supported biomedical research and medical advancement that saves millions of lives, creates new sectors of industry and provides a rare combination of high-quality jobs and hope for a healthier future.

“The President discussed the importance of investing in biomedical research and development to promote American competitiveness. We are grateful to our nation’s leaders for recognizing the role of biomedical research in driving economic growth. UMR looks forward to working with the President and Congress in support of NIH funding. Reducing the burden of illness and disease, creating the bioscience jobs of tomorrow and maintaining our competitive edge as the global leader in medical research – these are bipartisan goals on which the American people and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle can agree.”
